Chem Chem Safari Lodges, Chem Chem Reserve, Northern Tanzania
We believe a special anniversary, wedding or honeymoon should be celebrated in style so what better way than a safari to Africa. For the ultimate safari experience northern Tanzania is one of the top destinations for such a celebration – it is wild and remote with very few visitors. From the Tarangire visitors can witness a migration of animal herds to rival that of the Serengeti. In the dry summer months, the Tarangire River is the only source of water in the area and large numbers of elephants, zebra, wildebeest and other plains game migrate from the Simanjiro Plains and head into the park.
Liesl recommends two leading luxury eco-lodges in the Chem Chem Reserve; Little Chem Chem Lodge and Chem Chem Safari Lodge which are bordered by Lake Manyara in the west, Tarangire to the east, with access to Lake Burungi The Chem Chem Reserve comprises 20,000ha within the Burungi Wildlife Management area. For the ultimate visit combine a stay between Little Chem Chem situated facing east towards Tarangire –the sunrise camp, and Chem Chem Lodge situated facing west towards Lake Manyara – the sunset camp. Chem Chem is a palm oasis of eight stylish tented suites including one family unit offering an additional tent that can accommodate up to four children aged between ten and sixteen. The tents are beautifully designed to be as close to nature as possible. The Chem Chem Safari lodge is also a favourite with stunning views over Lake Manyara, its own waterholes, a wonderful gourmet restaurant and outdoor swimming pool and Chem Chem Amani Spa cottage. Little Chem Chem has five luxury vintage tents. From both properties a variety of wildlife excursions are on offer, ranging from enjoying the chef’s exquisite cuisine while watching giraffes, wildebeest, warthogs, zebras, impalas, aardvarks and hyenas drink from one of the watering holes, to animal tracking on foot on its private wildlife concession to taking a leisurely job with a massai warrior along the shore of Lake Manyara while observing thousands of flamingos!
Tanzania and Zanzibar are the perfect safari-beach combo. Zanzibar is the ultimate tropical island experience with its idyllic white sandy beaches together with a wealth of historical and cultural interests.
Our favourite Zanzibar hideaway is Kilindi which is set in 50 acres of lush tropical gardens with a wide powder-white sand beachfront spanning half a kilometre. It is exotic and striking and a place to rejuvenate in intimate luxury. Each of the fifteen domed villas are set within their own lush gardens accessed via a traditional style Zanzibar door! Each villa comprises bedroom suite and separate day room complete with its own private plunge pool. It’s an exquisite place to stay and the ultimate in barefoot luxury.

Celebrate your anniversary visiting the mystical Moai of Easter Island. Lost in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean and one of the remotest places on earth, Easter Island is an extraordinary outpost of humanity, which still holds the key to one of the civilisation’s most enduring mysteries. The island is home to the world famous Moai, huge monolithic stone sculptures of solemn faces that date back as much as 800 years and there are literally hundreds scattered about. Spectacular scenery, Birdman legends and colourful marine life all add to the island’s intrigue. Rapa Nui is a world heritage site and the lodges are integral to the overall experience of a visit here.
For something a bit different how about Vietnam? A private Sampan cruise on the Mekong soaking up the busy river life from the comfort of your boat is a real treat. If you like the idea of a travel by boat there is nothing more magical than a private cruise around Ha Long Bay with its mystical seascape of over 3000 magical limestone islands and lovely beaches bathed by the warm crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. The tiny islands are dotted with caves, grottoes and beaches and the surrounding scenery of towering mountains and lush forests is one of Vietnam’s most dramatic natural sights. Some really memorable occasions can be arranged such as a private dinner in one of the tower’s caves
