Ultimate Birthday Celebration

Celebrate a special birthday with the trip of a lifetime somewhere entirely different – here are some of our top choices:

Uganda – Gorilla Tracking

Our Africa Specialist, Liesl, recommends a thrilling adventure to get up close and personal with our cousins gorilla tracking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.  Liesl loves Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge for its remote location and far reaching views of treetops, volcanoes and mountains. It is Uganda’s highest lodge and it is small and intimate.  At Clouds guests stay in their own cottage built of local volcanic stone with a large sitting room and fireplace and a personal butler.

Uganda – Pineapple Bay Resort – Bulago Island, Lake Victoria

To complete the experience and ‘unwind yourself’ from the thrilling gorilla meeting, we recommend four nights barefoot ‘beach’ luxury at Pineapple Bay Resort on Bulago Island looking out to the sparkling waters of Lake Victoria.  You can explore the unspoiled island paradise, climb to a breezy hilltop, go in search of exotic birds or charter a fishing-boat to fish for the legendary Nile Perch or simply relax on the palm fringed white sandy beaches of the island.

We thought we should include the following feedback from clients who have recently returned from Uganda –  we asked if we could add their recommendation to our own!

“Pineapple Bay – I notice that this features in your latest blog email!  What a fantastic place it is – we both loved it.  Not really polished and blingy, it was more rustic luxury if you like, but absolutely perfect with impeccable service.  Huge rooms/bathrooms, comfy beds, big terraces to relax on – it felt like we were on a boat we were so close to the lake, the waves lapping at the edge of our terrace.  Fabulous birdlife – we just sat and watched it all go by.  In fact we were very lazy indeed and I think we need to go back so we can explore some of the walking trails, maybe go fishing, have a sundowner cruise….  I’m sure you know that they have the most fantastic organic garden where they grow all their own fruit and veggies – this place is called Pineapple Bay for a reason!  Never seen so many huge pineapples all growing in neat rows…. Plus bananas, mangoes, papayas, watermelons, lemons…  And loads of veggies.  The gardener was a chappie called Stephen and he was just so lovely, he seemed so genuinely delighted to be showing us round.  When he discovered I was a cook he started to test me, getting me to identify all these plants – and I did really well!  Lots of things that just don’t grow here – curry leaves, ginger, lemongrass, aubergines, avocados, it was just great. It makes me smile just to think about him, he was such a great chap.  And the chef worked wonders with all these lovely things – the food was fabulous.  We ate on the beach by the fire and we had the place to ourselves for our last two nights, it was just bliss.  Lara & Dawid, the managers, looked after us so well.  You must send more people here – it is so good!  … So, Karine – another fabulous trip, thank you.  I always feel that we’ve been incredibly well looked after, like there is someone to hold our hands every step of the way – thanks for organising it all for us.”Ms C & Mr J – Uganda – March 2014

We think Ms C sums it up rather well!

Malawi - Kaya Mawa, Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi is the third largest lake in Africa. Its shimmering waters seem to stretch forever and this is the perfect place to finish a safari.  The lake is perfect for scuba diving, snorkelling, sailing, kite surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, birdwatching and visits to the local villages which surround it. We recommend Kaya Mawa a unique and stunning lodge with a feeling of contemporary rustic chic.  It has been voted top ten ‘Most Romantic Places in the World’ and in the Tatler top 101 ‘Hotels in the World’.

India - Mihir Garh – Rajasthan

For a bit of exotic seclusion our India expert Helena, recommends a birthday to remember living like a maharajah at Mihir Garh.  Mihir Garh is located south of Jodpur which looks like it has emerged from the desert itself. Mihir Garh is an indulgent, palatial fortress with just nine magnificent suites of pure luxury, each with private terraces, courtyards, plunge pools and Jacuzzi designed to indulge every pore of your being.  Should you be able to tear yourself away from the luxury of your suite there are a plethora of activities which to enjoy from al fresco breakfasts enjoying the breath taking beauty of the place, royal lakeside picnics from an era long gone, village trips (which guests say were a highlight of the holiday), to the most sensational riding experience imaginable astride a famed ‘Marwari’ horse – an ancient and indigenous Indian breed of horse!  Mihir Garh promises to surprise you with something new to wonder upon leaving you yearning for a return visit!

Maldives – Filitheyo

What more thrilling and romantic than the sun, sea and sand of one of the world’s most remote and extraordinary natural aquariums. The sparkling jewels of the Maldives are the ultimate destination for rejuvenating the soul and celebrating something special.  one of our favorite is Filitheyo – the only resort in the unspoilt Foafu Atoll – with sensational snorkeling around the house reef and world class diving from the house dive center. Charming villas are dotted around the island’s perfect powder-white sand beaches which are lapped by the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean.  The food is out of this world – the chef combines fresh ingredients from Sri Lanka and locally caught fish to create some delicious local cuisine.
