Okavango Delta

Famous the world over as a watery land of palm-fringed islands teeming with wildlife, the Okavango Delta is one of the earth's great natural wonders. Over one thousand kilometres away in central Angola, the Kavango River starts its incredible journey towards Botswana and due to the ancient movement of the earth's fault lines the river is unable to reach the sea.

After flowing down the 'panhandle' it hits the sands of the Kalahari Desert and spreads into what becomes a myriad of lagoons, islands and water channels lined with swaying papyrus grass. The variety of animals and birds, some of which are unique to this area, is quite stunning and make this a unique wildlife destination.

On account of the varying terrain, some lodges offer water-based activities whilst others concentrate on game drives in open 4x4 vehicles. Birdlife is prolific and large herds of buffalo, elephant, giraffe and a variety of antelope are often encountered as well as the big cats and the increasingly endangered wild dog. However, the traditional mokoro is perhaps one of the most idyllic ways to go in search of game. Whilst your guide poles you through this web of hidden waterways and peaceful lagoons, a paradise of reeds, water lilies and other exotic plants, you are free to enjoy the abundant wildlife including the red lechwe, the rare sitatunga antelope and Pel's fishing owl.
