Marrakech
One of the oldest of the Imperial cities, Marrakech is a feast for the senses. Founded almost 1000 years ago at the foot of the mighty Atlas mountains, it has remained at the heart of Moroccan life ever since, acting as Sultanate capital on occasions, but now undoubtedly the country's cultural centre.
Its central square, Djemaa el Fna, is a constant bustle of basket sellers, fortune tellers, healers, dancers, pipe musicians and carts overflowing with dates, almonds, oranges and other exquisite delicacies. The Koutoubia mosque and Bahia Palace represent just some of the beautiful architecture of the city and to walk through the labyrinthine souks is a revelation in itself with plenty of excellent shopping opportunities. Marrakech is a city of immense energy and history and one of the most compelling of all African/Arab cities.
