Delhi
As the political capital and the principal gateway to the largest democracy in the world, Delhi's importance is assured, but its cultural past is no less important as a city steeped in history with a whole host of empires that used it as their capital over the last 3000 years.
Up to eight different cities have been built here through the centuries, a fact that has inevitably resulted in a wealth of architectural gems from forts and palaces to mosques and museums.
The Mongols, Persians and Mughals all had their capitals here and it was the British who named New Delhi as their capital, thus splitting the city into two halves. The fascination for this unique and beautiful city remains unabated and with so much to see, it is the perfect place to either start or end a visit to India.
