Khajuraho

Although it is now a relatively small and sleepy town, Khajuraho was once a thriving capital of the Chandela dynasty, during which a huge number of some of the most remarkable temples in India were built. They were constructed about 1000 years ago and all within a single century, which is a phenomenal achievement for that time, involving huge numbers of labourers and craftsmen alike.

The temples themselves have survived well and remain exquisitely carved examples of Indo-Aryan architecture. However they are undoubtedly most famous for the fact that they are generously embellished with explicit sexual images along the lines of the Kama Sutra.
