Galle
Galle is Sri Lanka’s fourth largest city and arguably the most interesting of all the currently inhabited cities. It enjoys a rich history ranging from the times of King Solomon through to the colonial era of the Portuguese who first arrived in 1505.
In the late 16th Century the Portuguese built a fort to ward off any trouble with the kings of Kandy, but it was the Dutch in the 17th Century who built the vast thirty six hectares fort that dominates the promontory of Galle and is now a World Heritage Site.
