Nuwara Eliya & the Tea Country
Located at an altitude of 1889m in the central hill country, Nuwara Eliya was the favourite hill station of the colonial British and much of the architecture and the atmosphere of that period is still prevalent today.
The town is also at the heart of the tea growing area, which is one of the country's most important exports and a visit to a working tea plantation and factory is a fascinating excursion.
The mountain climate and scenery are both breathtaking and invigorating with the country's highest mountain located here as well as the Horton Plains, which is a high windswept saddle of misty grassland and scraggy trees providing one of the finest views in the country as you look down the 4000 feet drop of the escarpment. Just outside the town are the Hakgala Botanical Gardens, which were once the pleasure gardens of King Ravana, a delightful place to visit with a wide variety of tropical plants and ferns including roses and orchids.
Our preferred hotels in the Tea Country include:
Tea Trails Bungalows (Norwood, Castlereagh, Summerville & Tientsin)
Lavender House
Tea Factory Hotel
Warwick Gardens
