Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage
The elephant orphanage at Pinnewala was set up to save abandoned and orphaned wild elephants and is now one of the most popular places to see elephants at close quarters. Housing around 60 elephants of a variety of ages and sizes, the orphanage keeps a strict routine and you can visit at bathing time in the nearby river or at feeding time, when a number of the infants are still bottle fed.
The orphanage is situated approximately 40 km to the east of Kandy, from where it can be visited as a day trip, or else en route when driving between Colombo to Kandy.
