Sohar & Surrounds
Sohar is a maritime town in a coastal region where the main attractions are forts, castles and long sandy beaches. It is said to be the home of the legendary Sinbad the Sailor and due to its maritime importance Sohar, or Majan as it used to be known, was also the capital of Oman centuries ago.
Sadly much of Sohar was destroyed in the 16th Century and it never quite regained its former glory. However, in the last 30 years or so it has developed into one of Oman’s most important economic centres and it is still sometimes referred to as the Gateway to China as this is the port from where traders went on their journeys to the Far East. Sohar fort is a landmark with historic significance, perched on a hilltop with five impressive towers.
The towns of Suwaiq, Rustaq and Nakhl are particularly interesting for their forts, old and well-preserved houses and magnificent mountains.
