Aleppo
Aleppo, Syria’s second largest city, dates back to the early 2nd millennium BC, competing with Damascus on being the oldest inhabited city in the world. Aleppo’s Old City has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and with its more than 12 km of vaulted stone passageways, Aleppo’s souks are the largest and most beautiful in the entire Middle East. The Aleppo citadel, a 12th Century fortress stands high above the city on a hill. Other points of interest in Aleppo include the National Museum and the Great Mosque.
To the north, south and west of Aleppo one can find more than 500 abandoned Byzantine settlements known as the Dead Cities, centres of huge wealth derived from the produce of olive oil. The St Simeon Basilica complex is the most famous, constructed in the 5th Century it was then the largest and most important church in the world.
