Bosra
Bosra, 140km south of Damascus and near the border with Jordan, is the second most important Roman city in Syria after Palmyra. Bosra's most famous monument is the Roman theatre, the most perfectly preserved and intact in the world and acknowledge as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980. The theatre appears even more dramatic and impressive by the blackness of its basalt stonework, also used throughout the rest of the city, and the fact that it is also concealed inside a 13th Century Ayyubid fortress.
