Bariloche & the Lake District
Nestling in the shadows of the Andes mountains to the south west of Buenos Aires, the Lake District is a natural paradise of glacial lakes, snow-capped peaks and spectacular scenic beauty. This is the adventure playground of Argentina where many people flock to during the holidays to enjoy a whole host of outdoors activities including the superb walking, hiking, sailing, fishing, horse riding (and skiing from July to September).
Created in 1934 to preserve the unique flora and fauna of the area and occupying 750,000 hectares of extraordinary natural beauty is Nahuel Huapi National Park. Overlooked by a long ridge of towering snow-capped Andean peaks and home to a large number of lakes, rivers, islands and lush forest, this stunning park has as its glittering centrepiece the vast Nahuel Huapi lake.
Set on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi is the town of Bariloche, which is the uncrowned capital of the area and the ideal base from which to explore and enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities. Bariloche is also the starting point for the exciting full day crossing into Chile’s Lake District through the lakes and mountains.
