Perito Moreno & Lago Argentino

Hugging the border with Chile in the far southern reaches of Patagonia is the stunning Los Glaciares National Park, which is a remote and spectacular world of towering mountains and glacial lakes and with the breathtaking Perito Moreno glacier as its centrepiece. This is one of the world’s few remaining glaciers that is still growing and as it slowly advances into the deep waters of Lago Argentino, its sheer scale and the ever present icebergs are a visual experience enhanced by the dramatic collapses of ice from the glacier’s 50 metre high face.

The Upsala Glacier can be approached by boat and is another highlight as you weave between giant blue icebergs along the many arms of Lago Argentino to view its vast bulk gradually sliding from icy peaks.

En route a number of the other 365 glaciers in the park can be seen as can Estancia Cristina, which is an important part of Patagonian history and legend filled with the relics of past adventures and scientific expeditions and once described by Eric Shipton, the famous explorer, as ´a mysterious place, the most remote ranch in Patagonia, maybe in all the world.’ The northern end of Los Glaciares National Park is home to the Fitz Roy Range, which is arguably the most majestic area of all the Andean mountains and despite being quite remote, is fast becoming one of the most popular regions in which to enjoy some spectacular hikes and treks surrounded by forest, rivers, glaciers and the ever imposing peaks of Mount Torre and Mount Fitz Roy.
