Ambergris and Caulker Cayes

Belize has the world’s biggest and best aquarium, encompassing hundreds of square miles of the Carribean Sea.  Previously bases for Mayan traders, Spanish conquistadors and British pirates, the cayes now combine the atmosphere of sleepy fishing villages with the thrill of wetsuits and fins for some truly spectacular underwater exploration or sport fishing.

Ambergris is the northernmost and largest of Belize’s cayes.  The main settlement is San Pedro, where most of the 3,000 strong population live in colourful wooden clapperboards houses spanning three streets.  Flamingos, pelicans, egrets and a myriad of other wildlife linger in the lagoon on the west side of the island which you can explore by electric golf cart, bicycle or horse. Sea kayaks are the best way to view the coastline, and diving or snorkelling in the Ho Chan Marine Reserve is equally rewarding for inexperienced snorkelers and veteran divers alike.  A ride in a glass bottom boat ensures that everyone can see the spectacular sights without ever getting wet.

Caye Caulker is somewhat smaller and less developed than Ambergris with a population of only 750. The sea based activities are similar to those at San Pedro, and from here you can take excursions to smaller cayes and marine parks. There are excellent diving and fishing opportunities, endless water sports available and numerous idyllic places to hideaway, relax and soak up the sun.
