Money - The currency of The Falkland Islands is the The Falkland Islands Pound, which is directly equivalent to the UK Pound Sterling. The use and acceptance of credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard is growing and they are generally accepted in many places in Stanley, but an alternative payment source such as cash is sensible, especially in remote areas.

Climate - a rough guide

The saying goes that the Falklands Islands enjoy all four seasons every day so as a rule of thumb the weather is generally quite changeable.

Overall the Falklands have a climate that is fairly similar to that of the UK, which is generally pleasant and sunny in the summer (October to April) with average temperatures around 60F, although it can regularly hit the mid to high 70'sF. Nightime temperatures tend to hover around 40F. Being in the southern Atlantic Ocean the islands are prone to fairly strong prevailing winds from the west and these can be a little stronger in the summer than the winter.

The winters (June to August) are significantly cooler with an average daytime temperature of around 36F and a night temperature around 32F and there can be a windchill factor that can make it feel a fair bit cooler.

On the while rainfall is quite low all year round with the east being a little wetter than the west of the country.

When to go - In brief, the best time to visit the Falkland Islands is in Summer (October to April) when the weather is settled and relatively temperate and the migratory birds and wildlife are returning south to the beaches and other varied habitats of the islandsThe peak period for wildlife viewing is generally considered to be November to February.

It is possible to visit all year round including the Winter (June – August) , but the main attractions are generally closed and the wildlife viewing is not so good.
