Caracas
Caracas, capital of Venezuela, is the country’s most densely populated city with nearly six million inhabitants and is the political, administrative, financial, industrial and cultural center.
The city spreads for about 25 km through a narrow valley and is located about one hour from the international airport. Caracas is a predominatly modern city, with towering skyscrapers overlooking houses and neighbourhoods immersed in the green hills, all in stark contrast to the shantytowns.
There are a few remnants of the city's colonial past, the Capitolio, the Concejo Municipal, the Museo Sacro de Cracas, the Catedral and of course the leafy Plaza Bolivar where the city's most famous son, Simon Bolivar, is remembered by an equestrian statue.
Caracas has a pleasant, sunny climate, due to its position at 900 metres, high in the hills above the coast.
