The Orinoco Delta
The delta of the Orinoco river is the second largest in South America after the delta of the Amazon River. It is less known - and less visited - and offers 25,000 square kilometres of channels and islands prolific in forests and mangroves, teeming with wildlife.
The Rio Orinoco reaches a width of 20km before splitting into 40 main 'caños' (canals) and several secondary ones which flow out along 360 km of Atlantic coast.
The delta is the home of the Warao Indians, who live in 'palafitos' (stilt houses) on the banks of the river. The main staple food and raw material for the Warao Indians is the Moriche palm, which is spread throughout the region. The 'curiara', a dugout boat made from the trunk of the Moriche palm, is the main means of transport between channels and islands, for the Indians and tourists alike!
