Belize

In what was formerly known as British Honduras, the steamy rainforests and spectacular coral reefs encompass an area roughly the size of Wales. With a tiny population of just 266,000 people, the main attraction for the visitor to Belize is its incredible and largely untouched natural environment.

ACTUN TUNICHIL MUKNAL (ATM) CAVE TOUR

400x300-ATM031-450x300

One of the most popular tours in Belize is a fascinating and exciting visit to the Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave. The tour starts with a 45 minute jungle hike into the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve where you access the cave which involves swimming across a small spring-fed pool and several stream crossings and wade into knee-high water into the dark underworld of the cave. You get to explore the extensive underground maze of tunnels, passageways and chambers with many stalactites and stalagmites, which dramatically ends in the ancient, ceremonial Mayan burial chambers with calcified remains, (including the remains of a Maya Princess buried several centuries ago), as well as ceremonial vessels and numerous artefacts used by the Maya during their ritual sacrificial ceremonies.

NIGHT SAFARIS & AIRBOATING AT LAMANAI

450x300-airboat011-450x300

Whizzing through the New River floodplains aboard a custom-built Florida style airboat is an exciting way to explore the stunning scenery and then park up and observe the wildlife and watch the sun slowly set with a few cocktails and snacks in hand….a great end to the day!

Another great excursion here is to climb aboard a river boat and head out after dinner on a night safari in search of a huge variety of wildlife. You can even get involved with research on the Morelet’s crocodile by helping the guides to weigh and measure them when they get them onboard before helping them back into lily strewn waterways.

December to May is traditionally the best time to travel to Belize with clear skies and dry, warm weather. June to mid August are still great months to visit with just the occasional shower.

September to November are the months to avoid as this is when the rain can be heaviest and with the occasional hurricane.
